doug is a superpower to be reckoned with, and the divine caroleen beatty — his vocalist in waycross and for the eno show — is utterly amazing. expect to be totally crushed out with the pair of them. i know i am!

Release date: December 7th, 2004

moth wranglers is the anti-band collaboration between ld beghtol (flare, three terrors, guest vocalist on the magnetic fields’ 69 love songs) and chris xefos (drop quarters, ex-king missile).

never better, their follow-up to 2001’s critically-confused debut CD “never mind the context”, reveals moth wranglers’ modus operandi: hi-jack best-of-breed performers from various bands and other less organized situations in order to fulfill their musical destiny — world domination. sinister as that may sound, it’s done for the greater good of music as we know it.

technology has allowed beghtol and xefos to work together closely (from opposing coasts) to create a record that focuses on the pair as a team — not just ring leaders of their musical circus. using their physical distance as a tool, they are allowed to grow musically (and physically) in completely different ways — whatever common ground remains is expressed in never better.

while featuring an eclectic array of instruments and genres, the songs flow seamlesly into one another (literally), creating not merely a nice collection of songs, but rather a total listening experience.

you’ll find pretty pop songs, epic piano ballads and musical mayhem, including a 7.5-minute cover of the pixies’ “no. 13 baby” — appropriately dubbed the “all night long mix.”

bribery, blackmail and debauchery have seduced the likes of christopher ewen (future bible heroes), doug hilsinger (waycross), dudley klute (three terrors), and jeff potts (dirty power) into helping moth wranglers carry out their master plan. resistance is fertile.

“If [moth wranglers’] production recalls the shoestring ingenuity of Joe Meek, the ambitious arrangements – featuring ukelele, washboard and harmonium – land closer to Phil Spector’s ‘symphonies for the kids.’ ”
The Advocate

“The world needs more ideas like the Moth Wranglers: people who hold a wake instead of a funeral, who take drugs because the world doesn't seem normal without them, and who scribble moustaches on Mona Lisas.”
Pitchfork Media

“[moth wranglers] have nice friends. The whole gang makes urban theatrical-folk that you’re drawn to, web-like.”
Philadelphia City Paper

“...you’re likely not prepared for Moth Wranglers.”
Delusions of Adequacy

“Listening to the Moth Wranglers makes me want to kill myself.”
fakejazz.com

“You think gangsta rap and horror flicks are the current dangers to the teenage population? Try a whiff of the Moth Wranglers and you’ll see what musical terror is really about.”
